Citizens of a Member State of the European Union or of another State party to the Agreement on the European Economic Area have the possibility of staying in Spain for a period of more than three months if they obtain their European Union Citizen Registration Certificate and their family members.

What requirements do I have to meet in order to apply for the European Union Citizen Registration Certificate?

If you are a citizen of a Member State of the European Union or of another State party to the Agreement on the European Economic Area, you can apply for your Certificate of Registration as a European Union Citizen if you meet any of the following conditions:

• You are an employee or self-employed (freelance) in Spain,
• You have sufficient financial resources for yourself and your family members to avoid becoming a burden on the Spanish social assistance system during the period of your residence, as well as health insurance to cover your health care in Spain,
• You are enrolled in a public or private study (training) centre, recognised or financed by the educational administration, to study, including vocational training, and if you also have health insurance that covers your health care in Spain, as well as guaranteeing that you have sufficient financial means for you and your family members, so that you do not become a burden on Spanish social assistance,
• You are a member of the family of a citizen of the European Union or of another State party to the Agreement on the European Economic Area.

Nationals of a Member State of the European Union or of another State party to the Agreement on the European Economic Area are thus obliged to apply for registration in the Central Register of Foreigners in order to obtain their Certificate of Registration as a European Union Citizen.
